trauma

In essence trauma results from an event that causes an overwhelming sensation or feeling that exceeds one’s ability to cope or integrate the emotions experienced. This can be a single event or may be a result of prolonged or recurring events.

Trauma’s affects can also be influenced by developmental factors. When trauma is experienced at different developmental stages it can have an impact on developmental progress. For instance sexual abuse experienced at 6 years old will affect us differently than sexual abuse experienced at 14 years old. Although equally horrific,  the sort term and long term effects will differ.

Terror, horror, and helplessness are some of the emotions that are experienced during trauma.

Examples of trauma include but are not limited to sexual abuse, physical abuse or neglect, domestic violence or unrest, natural disasters, national disasters, war, displacement, invasive medical procedures, or witnessing of violent acts.

Trauma affects can be mitigated by resources such as a safe environment to express and process emotions, a healthy support system, and mental health resources to name a few.

We have all been affected by trauma either personally or contact with family members and friends who have experienced trauma whether we know it or not. We might not recognize the effects of trauma but it is in our society. In the US we have good access to mental health services. We have access to copious books, websites, and programs. But, they are almost exclusively in English and supported by research done in the US. We need to share that knowledge and those resources with the people of Nicaragua.
